METCOTE PRIMER

METCOTETM is a specially formulated etch primer that can be used on iron, steel, aluminium, fiberglass, and galvanized steel. Metcote is an ideal primer for use with Protecta-kote.

PRODUCT USES
  • Primer for Protecta-kote.
  • Primer for all metal and fibreglass surfaces.
  • Heat resistant coating for fireplaces
ADVANTAGES
  • Excellent adhesion to metal.
  • Quick drying (30 mins at 25ºC).
  • Can be topcoated with most paints after 2 hours.
  • Heat resistant up to 220ºC
  • Good acid, alkali and water resistance.
COVERAGE
Approximately 8 to 10 m2/l depending on surface

SURFACE PREPARATION
All surfaces must be clean, dry, firm and free of rust and mill scale.
  • Mild Steel: Abrade the surface with 100 - 360 grit sand paper. If abrasive blasting is desired the blast profile should not exceed 15 microns.
  • Galvanised Iron: Wash with a galvanised iron pre-cleaner until a water break free surface is obtained. Rinse with clean water. Allow to dry.
  • Aluminium and Stainless steel: Abrade with 220 grit waterpaper using turps or Duram Solvent as lubricant, then rinse with Xylene.
  • Fibreglass: Abrade with 120 to 150 grit sandpaper. Rinse with Xylene.
APPLICATION
  • Stir Metcote well.
  • Apply thinly by brush, roller or spray.
  • For conventional spray application thin with lacquer thinners (approx 20%) to 16 - 20 secs (Ford Cup 4)
  • NOTE: Lacquer thinners must not come into contact with Protecta-kote. Allow Metcote to dry completely before overcoating with Protecta-kote
OVERCOATING
Allow a minimum of 60 minutes (at 25ºC). Metcote must be completely dry before overcoating with any polyurethane coating such as Protecta-kote.

PRECAUTIONS
  • Wet Metcote is toxic and flammable.
  • Once cured it is non toxic, inert and harmless.
  • Wear gloves and avoid skin contact.
  • Avoid excessive inhalation.
  • Keep lacquer thinners away from Protecta-kote
CLEANING
Use lacquer thinners. If Metcote is splashed in the eye, wash with copious amounts of water and seek medical attention

LIMITATIONS
When applied to mild steel externally Metcote must be topcoated within 14 days to avoid oxidation.
